COMPETITIONS
Wombwell Sporting Athletics Club enters various competitions throughout the year which caters for all age groups and disciplines.
North of England T & F League
Wombwell competes in the North of England League and is currently in League 4EC. This league is for all athletes which are in the U17 age group and above. There is 5 other teams in the league which are: Derby AC, Longwood Harriers, Grimsby AC, Hull Achilles and Newark AC. In the last meeting in May, Wombwell finished 5th only 27 points from 4th place.
South Yorkshire T & F League
The South Yorkshire Track and Field League is a league for all age groups. We compete against 9 other South Yorkshire clubs. Junior athletes have to compete in a championship where they have to do a run, jump and a throw in which they collect points accordingly and medals/trophies are awarded at the ned of the season. At the last meeting in this league, the Wombwell senior team finished a very impressive 2nd place, 104 points in front of a 3rd placed Barnley AC.
South Yorkshire 5 mile Road League
The South Yorkshire Road League is a competition which includes a series of four 5 mile road races over the course of April and May. This competition is for athletes who are 16 years and older. In the last race of the 2009 race series, Wombwell had a total of 9 runners competing which has not been seen for quite a few years.
South Yorkshire Cross Country League
This is a competition of 4 cross country races over the winter season. Each race is run over fields, paths and plenty of mud! The distance varies for each age group but usually goes up to 10k for senior athletes. These events are challenging but very enjoyable. The result of all 4 races is added up at the end of the series and medals awarded to the top three in each age group. Around 20 South Yorkshire Running Clubs compete in this league. There are hundreds of other competitions and events that athletes can compete in throughout the year from the London Marathon down to a nice easy 800m at an open track and field meeting, (although how easy it is depends on how fast you run!)
